The 5 P’s of Vigilantly Moving Valuable Items

More than 35 million people move to a new address each year. Many of them will be moving valuable items. If each of those 35 million people moved just five valuable items, we’re talking about 175 million vintage G.I. Joe action figures, Andy Warhol prints, Stickley furniture pieces, etc.

We’re also talking about 175 million opportunities to stress out totally. And that’s probably on the low side.

Taking the following five steps will you dial down that stress to a tolerable level when moving valuable items. They might even allow you to turn the stress completely off.

1. Preparation

Here’s one you’ve heard from your mother a hundred times: “Haste makes waste.” If there’s a cardinal sin of moving, it’s poor preparation. A move is too big an undertaking to tackle at the proverbial last minute. If you’re getting started with less than 90 days to go, there’s going to be some waste. Hopefully, it won’t come in the form of one of your early issues of Amazing Spider-Man.

2. Professional insight

Moving from a tiny one bedroom apartment to your first home! Congratulations! (Remember to thank your friends profusely after they’re done helping you lug that giant armoire into the new place.) But if your move involves anything on a larger scale, speak to a professional. These are folks who move precious cargo every day; the right mover will prove as valuable an asset as the four gold American Buffalo coins your grandfather gave you when you turned 18.

3. Packaging

Those used boxes your local grocer is kind enough to give you? Put your everyday items in there. For the valuable pieces, splurge on new and stronger boxes. Depending on the size of the object in question, you might even consider having your moving company place it in a crate. Cushioning foam, corner guards, wardrobe boxes, packing peanuts, air pillows: everything you need is readily available to help protect your family heirlooms.

4. Patience

Patience isn’t simply a virtue. It’s the one thing you’ll need above all else to make sure your valuables are well cared for. The top-notch moving supplies listed in the previous point? They’re not the kind of thing you slap onto autographed Muhammad Ali boxing gloves. You need to take the time to apply them carefully. Slowly. Surely. Without haste.

5. Paranoia

Despite the many tons of possessions associated with all of the moving going on every year, the number of claims filed against movers is remarkably low. But the numbers won’t persuade you. When it comes to those items you hold most dear, you’re going to be a little paranoid. And you know what? That’s okay. It turns out that being a little paranoid can help you maintain a productive edge. If you ultimately decide to handle your most precious possessions personally, no one is going to blame you. We all have material goods we wish to hold onto for a long, long time.
