The first European settlers arrived in the 1780s and obtained a deed from the Chippewa Indians. The community was known as "Yankee Point" and "Belle River" before being platted as the Village of Newport in 1834. Although it never incorporated, it was known as "Newport" for 31 years until the village of Marine City was incorporated in 1865. The village re-incorporated as a city in June 1887.
